Policy & Legislation

Digital

A large part of our industry’s competitiveness relies on our companies’ capacity to develop and bring in digital developments. Digital transformation focuses on information management, space optimisation, human-to-machine cooperation and improvement of decision and prediction. These processes involve a variety of key technologies:  IoT including Industrial Wireless Networks (IWN) that can sense, identify, process and communicate, Cyber-Physical Systems, Cloud/Edge Computing, Robotics, Big Data analytics, Augmented Reality, AI including Machine Learning, Digital Twins, Blockchain and Simulation and Additive Manufacturing.

FEM works with policy makers to ensure a supportive regulatory framework that enables our industry to make the most of the opportunities offered by digital developments.

Cybersecurity

The development of smart networks (IoT, Operation Technologies, smart sensors, new connections, new partners) requires a solid cybersecurity framework addressing one of the major challenges posed by digitalisation. FEM supports a framework that helps manufacturers build the cyber resilience and security of their products, contrasting the rise of cyberattacks and hackings in the European Single Market, whilst preserving European innovation and competitiveness.

Digital policies and legislation relevant to materials handling equipment includes:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data
  • Cybersecurity
  • Digital services
Data

A full digitisation of the supply chain eco-system can only become reality if the massive production of data generated by more and more connected  products, including sensor equipped products such as equipment with autonomous guide functions or integrating telematic devices, is exploited intelligently.

Through smart networks that enable innovation, the supply chain becomes a value chain. This requires clean and exchangeable data, which implies interoperability, transparency and openness to data.

FEM supports the development of B2B data exchange and an economic model that incentivises data sharing while ensuring that trade secrets and intellectual property rights are protected and that safety and security requirements are not undermined.
