Racking and Shelving

The FEM Racking & Shelving (FEM R&S) Product Group of national manufacturers Associations has the aim of influencing all manufacturers and the market worldwide towards common, cost effective and safe technical standards.

Members

The Product Group consists of:

  • 11 National Committees: Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.
  • 4 Individual Countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Romania and Norway.
  • 2 Associate Members: Australia and Egypt.
Objectives

Mission Statement

  • To represent, promote and protect the interests of the European racking, shelving and related products industry.
  • To establish a source of information for manufacturers, control organisations, users, teaching bodies and government authorities.
  • To facilitate discussion about technical, commercial and economic storage equipment and methods issues.
  • To facilitate collaboration on definition and classification of equipment, terminology, development of standards, quality, market data, and research and development.
  • To publish a range of studies and documents promoting better utilisation of storage equipment.
  • To promote any other activity of value to manufacturers and users.
Activities

The current work plan consists of a number of working groups involving engineers from across our membership:

  • Preparation work for the conversion of the FEM 10.2.06 Shelving Code to an EN standard.
  • FEM R&S is active in CEN TC344, including work for the conversion of the FEM R&S codes to EN standards. Chair of CEN TC 344 is Giuseppe Fabbri who is also active in FEM R&S activities.
  • Work with other CEN TC’s on EN Codes associated with Racking and Shelving structures.
  • Work to create a new FEM Code for Industrial Steel Platforms.
  • Production of Technical Bulletins on relevant issues for the industry.
  • Liaison with Technical Engineers from FEM R&S companies through a dedicated area of the FEM R&S website.
  • Responding to Technical queries on relevant issues or concerns.
Documents

Technical documents

FEM R&S has been active in producing a range of FEM and European Codes on the design and development of racking and shelving. These include general Codes for the industry and Worked Examples to help Engineers interpret the Codes. Specific Codes for shelving, drive in and cantilever racking have also been published. A full list of the FEM Codes available can be found and purchased on the FEM R&S website in the publications section. 

Position papers and press releases

FEM R&S publishes Technical Bulletins, which address issues for the industry. The website www.fem-rands.org includes relevant bulletins and press releases.

Members and Working Groups are provided with access to a document database of relevant materials through a dedicated area of the FEM R&S website.
