Technical Legislation
Our equipment handles materials and products of all sizes and shapes. It operates under various constraints such as speed, height and precision, thereby necessitating a high level of safety for workers and their environment throughout its lifetime.
FEM’s approach to any type of technical legislation is based on a few overarching principles:
- Self-certification must remain at the basis of Internal Market legislation
- Efficient market surveillance is necessary to ensure that legal requirements are effective and a level-playing field on the EU market, notably towards competition from third countries
- Third party certification cannot replace market surveillance
Regulation on Machinery is arguably the single most important piece of legislation for our manufacturers. Since its first version, it has been an effective and successful internal market legislation. Not only has it provided the highest level of machinery safety in the world, but it has also enabled the material handling industry to continue innovating, thriving and taking the lead in many segments. After the latest revision, FEM experts work with policy makers to ensure a clear and practical implementation of the updated rules.
With the New Legislative Framework, which FEM wholeheartedly supports, standardisation is a major compliance tool that allows manufacturers to translate generic legal requirements into product-specific technical specifications. It is therefore of the utmost importance that the standardisation system remains industry-led, since industry itself is best-placed to devise technical specifications on its own products.
Technical policies and legislation relevant to materials handling equipment includes:
- Machinery
- Market surveillance
- New Legislative Framework
- Standardisation
- Exhaust emissions from non-road mobile machinery
- Outdoor noise
- Low voltage
- Radio equipment
- Road circulation
